The Scrum Master of Puppets

On January 3, 2009, in Oddities & Fun, by Steffen Itterheim

Did you know that Metallica foretold all the common pitfalls of Scrum Masters?

No?

Let me explain it by this excerpt from the Metallica song Master Of Puppets from the album of the same name.

Master, Master, where’s the dreams that I’ve been after? (disillusioned team member to Scrum Master, possibly looking for career advice?)
Master, Master, you promised only lies (disappointed team member to Scrum Master who didn’t deliver as promised)
Laughter, laughter, all I hear or see is laughter (Scrum Master notices healthy team, or Scrum Master being ignored)
Laughter, laughter, laughing at my cries (Scrum Master losing confidence, getting choked up, shouting)
Fix me! (this is an impediment talking)
Hell is worth all that, natural habitat (no matter what you do, Scrum Master still ends up in hell – naturally)
Just a rhyme without a reason (a clueless Scrum Master)
Neverending maze, Drift on numbered days (Scrum Master lost, powerless, about to be removed/replaced)
Now your life is out of season (Scrum Master burned out)
I will occupy (Management taking hold of Scrum Master)
I will help you die (Scrum Master being mobbed, or Scrum Master mobbing)
I will run through you (Scrum Master was bypassed for a sprint change, someone is clearly breaking the rules)
Now I rule you too (Management taking control of Scrum Master, or Scrum Master controlling team)
Come crawling faster (Management executing leverage over Scrum Master)
Obey your Master (a cocky Scrum Master, misuse of power)
Your life burns faster (Scrum Master being mobbed again)
Obey your Master (Management: true Master of the Scrum Master?)
Master! (Team: Who now? I’m lost… lost in ScrumButt. Help!)

Now doesn’t that ring a lot of bells?

Ok before i drift off into another Metallica song For Whom The Bell Tolls let me end this post. :)
